Organizational Structure

The project is under the University of Malawi, Bunda College. It has a National Management Committee (NMC), which is always chaired by the University of Malawi – Bunda College. The project is being run by ten staff members with four stationed at the national office in Lilongwe, and two at each of the market information centers. Besides the staff, IDEAA also uses consultants to undertaken short-term specific activities.

ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE

NATIONAL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
Composition

The committee is made up of individuals who are leaders of key agricultural institutions in Malawi as follows:
  1. Principal for Bunda College of Agriculture (Chair)
  2. Secretary for Agriculture
  3. Coordinator for Southern Africa Roots and Tubers Network (SARRNET)
  4. Chairperson for Cassava Growers and Marketing Association
  5. Coordinator for IDEAA Project
Role/Terms of Reference
  1. Provide policy guidance and oversight of IDEAA Project
  2. Review project proposals and if need be co-opt some other expertise.
  3. Review annual plans, budgets and progress reports
  4. Monitor and evaluate the program through reports and selected field visits approved by the Chairperson
  5. Social marketing of IDEAA and assist in mobilizing resources and changing the mindset of policy makers to realize the importance of commercializing smallholder agriculture
  6. Facilitate the establishment of partnerships with relevant institutions.
  7. Select, appoint, and renew contracts of Project Coordinator and senior officers
  8. Act as an appeal and arbitration forum
  9. The chairperson is also responsible for submitting reports and project proposals to the donor

THE PROJECT NATIONAL COORDINATOR

  1. Implementation of a commodity neutral agriculture marketing information system including harnessing of the rural entrepreneurs and private sector in MIS service provision and development of partnerships with NGOs working with smallholder farmers to help farmers access the MIS service.
  2. Commission studies, consultancies including monitoring and evaluation, base-lining surveys etc.
  3. Promote and co-ordinate communication and social marketing of the project concept and its activities through various activities such as the production of a newsletter/bulletins, participation in networking activities including organizing conferences, and workshops.
  4. Facilitate linkage of farmers with service providing institutions.
  5. Facilitate and promote the creation and consolidation of cassava growers and marketing associations.

THE SYSTEMS DEVELOPEMENT OFFICER

The key role for the SD position include designing and developing new information and management systems whilst maintaining and improving existing technologies. Responsibilities include:

  1. Providing technical management of the Malawi Agriculture Marketing Information System.
  2. Collecting, processing, storing, managing and disseminating marketing information.
  3. Providing technical assistance by responding to inquires from users regarding errors, problems or questions about disseminated marketing information.
  4. Developing, maintaining, and updating SMS, IVMS and website.
THE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

The key responsibility is to provide technical assistance/business counselling to smallholder farmers. She is also be responsible for outreach and marketing activities facilitation to attract clients. Responsibilities include:

  1. Contacting the key agriculture commodity buyers/sellers on a regular basis to identify potential business opportunities.
  2. Preparing periodic reports showing prospective trade volumes/demand.
  3. Maintaining accurate, up to date business development database with appropriate historical notes.
  4. Developing and meeting (preferably exceeding) annual goals and Linking farmers to service providers.

MARKET INFORMATION CENTER (MIC)

Responsibilities include

  1. Collection and dissemination of wholesale market prices for agricultural products from selected rural and urban markets.
  2. Collection of trade opportunity information from buyers and sellers and Linking buyers and sellers of agriculture commodities.

MARKET INFORMATION POINT (MIP)

Responsibilities include

  1. Collection and dissemination of wholesale market prices for agricultural products from selected rural markets.
  2. Collection of trade opportunity information from buyers and sellers and Linking buyers and sellers of agriculture commodities.
